Each
child will dress and act like an historic person of note throughout
the morning of our "Halloween Heroes" celebration, without telling anyone who he or she is. At the end of
the morning the children will present three (or more) biographical
“clues” about their heroes in order to challenge the class in a
guessing game about who they are. Clues should be written down in
advance at home on index cards.
Some children may need a trip to the
library on the weekend to get some ideas. I will also encourage
perusal of our classroom library which has many biographies for all
ages. Picture books about famous personalities can be helpful for
younger students – definitely keep it simple!
Costumes
may be very simple, too – even just a prop or two which represent
the character or personality of the figure. Some students may want to
be more elaborate as this costume could double as their actual
Halloween costume for a party or trick-or-treating. Make-up, wigs,
and hats are permitted at school, but no masks, weapons, scary or
gruesome costumes/props, please.
At the end of the day, the students put together mini biographies and take a picture in their costumes. They bind together a memory book of the day's heroes to commemorate the event. Feel free to stop in our
classroom after school any day to see our albums of pictures and bios
from previous years.
